S'pore don on hunger strike

SINGAPORE: An opposition politician involved in an abortive polls bid to unseat Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong Monday began yesterday a hunger strike to protest his sacking from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Mr Chee Soon Juan, 31, who had his last meal at dawn, said he will stay off all food until university authorities retract allegations that he was dishonest. "I have asked the univeristy to retract all their accusations though they need not reinstate me," he said. Chee, who is also assistant secretarygeneral of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), taught psychology at the NUS before his dismissal last week for allegedly misusing research funds. - AFP
